Social Media and the Potential for Good

Social media has become a huge part of our daily lives in a multitude of ways. People use them to connect with friends and family, share thoughts and ideas, and discover interesting new things. However, a lot of negative effects have been seen with social media’s influence. The impact on mental health and misinformation in the news are both prominent and legitimate concerns with consequences for many.

But this widespread influence can be wielded as a tool for good as well. Never before have people been as connected as they are today in the age of the internet. This not only means that people can learn from those different than them, but also means that there is great potential for collaboration. Social media allows masses of people from all over the world to gather behind causes they are passionate about.

In a similar vein, social media provides a voice to those without one. There are attempts to censor certain groups or opinions but in general, anyone can use social media and have the power to let their thoughts be known.

Despite the overwhelming worries about negative effects, social media on its own is just a tool, a tool that if used correctly can spark movements, connect groups, and put power in the hands of everyday people to do great good.
