Reading and Writing

In Chapter 9 of Animated Storytelling, Liz Blazer talks about the idea of Technique. Technique involves figuring out which animation medium best fits the story you are trying to tell.

Technique vs Style: Something to keep in mind is the difference between technique and style. Technique encompasses the actual way something is animated, whether through hand drawing, 2D or 3D stop motion, or 2D or 3D CGI. Style is the appearance of the visuals and the feelings associated with it. For example, flat vector images are smooth and modern, used on the web and in infographics; handmade animation uses real materials “to achieve a vintage or innocent feeling” (Blazer); and film and type combines video footage with animated text to create a dynamic visual.

With the variety of techniques and styles to choose from, it is important to pick the one that will best convey the emotions and message of the story you are telling.

Research to Inform

This clip from an old Tom and Jerry episode shows the use of anticipation. Tom slowly grabs the knife, then pulls it back and pauses before swinging. It builds a sense of tension as viewers wait to see him move.

This TikTok shows the Slim Jim logo being animated. It uses slow in and slow out to have the starting circle drop into the logo, which then spins itself to a stop.

Create

I used my logo to create this logo stinger and incorporated animation concepts like squash and stretch to do so.
